Salomon's history

Salomon began as a family business in France of 1947, manufacturing saw blades and then moving on to steel edges for skis. Decade by decade, the company crept towards becoming the sports gear giant that it eventually would be. Today, the company is large enough to juggle multiple CEOs across multiple departments, with a large parent company.

Salomon has tried a lot of different additions to its lineup over time, but its catalogue has remained remarkably consistent. Although Salomon offers hundreds of products for different purposes, that doesn't mean that it's constantly pumping out completely new lineups and alienating old customers. Salomon makes incremental improvements to products it already knows are good, in addition to innovating in key areas where there's a lot for it to do. Through this approach, Salomon ensures that products worth selling stay sold, and sports people everywhere ultimately benefit from Salomon's venerable knowledge and large rafts of lineups.

Sustainability

Salomon has a unique sustainability program where they focus not just on their ""playgrounds"", the environment, but their customers, the ""players"". To help the world, Salomon invents a significant fraction of its revenue into education for athletes and other sports people, and it also invests in various important bits of infrastructure that will ultimately help keep the world going and ready for sports.

Shoes and boots

Salomon makes some shoes and boots for ""universal"" purposes, meaning they'll be just as useful for both walking and running. This has obvious appeal to casual athletes, and it's useful if all you want is to buy a backup pair of shoes in case what you have now breaks down. Salomon also makes more specialized boots for skiing or mountaineering in heavy now, so even more serious athletes might find a lot of merit in Salomon's lineup.

Skis and snowboards

Salomon got its feet wet in sports gear making blades for skis, so it's natural that the company today markets skis and snowboards, for as wide a variety of users as its other lineups. Salomon skis and snowboards are defined by simple-looking exteriors and subdued but visible decals, backed by solid construction. Salomon also makes skateboards, although not as frequently as the more alpine boards.
