Petzl was officially started in 1975, although their first products entered the market in 1970. It was founded by Fernand Petzl, a cave enthusiast. Since childhood, he had tried to develop gear that would make climbing easier. The earliest products of the company are climbing ropes which were simply named Fernand Petzl. The company started developing products for the professional market in 1990, and the first of these inventions was the self-braking belay device.
The company is currently managed by Fernand's son, Paul Petzl. The team is still made up of sports enthusiasts, and this means their products befit members of the sporting community. Members of the company's team include Eneko Pou (a rock climber), Hee Yong Park (a mountaineering enthusiast) and Sean Villanueva (a multi-pitch climbing expert). Petzl has also demonstrated high levels of innovation, particularly with the Grigri device.
Petzl has a wide range of head torches. These were actually some of the first products released by the company back when it started. The head torches include Tikka, Tikkina, Zipka, Actik and Actik Core. All these torches can fit the Core Li-Po battery. An advantage of this battery is the fact that it can charge with a micro USB and can also be replaced with 3 AAA batteries if necessary. The best head torch in the company is the Actik Core. It has 350 lumens and comes with its own Core Li-Po battery.
Petzl is also known for its range of ice axes. These are used in mountain climbing. Ice axes from this company are designed to be light and comfortable to carry. They also have very good self-arrest performance. Some ice axes produced by the company include the Summit 18, Summit Evo 18, Piolet Sumtec Marteau 17, and Gully Marteau 18.
Petzl's ascending and descending devices are still leaders in the market. These single-rope brake-assisted belay devices offer excellent performance and are highly reliable. Also, they have ergonomic designs that are hard to beat. Presently, the best belay device from Petzl is the Grigri 2. It is light, small and can work with modern thin ropes. It also offers great control while lowering.
