Brand history

In 1890 in Savoie, France, Joseph Opinel began to manufacture basic knives for local working men. These soon proved popular and different sizes of knife were introduced. Word of the brand spread quickly as railway workers (with whom the knives were popular) travelled throughout France. It is said that Picasso used an Opinel knife as a sculpting tool, adding to the brand's legend.

Brand Strengths and Best-Sellers

Traditional Yet Innovative

The company still makes a model identical to the Joseph Opinel original, maintaining the history and tradition of the brand. However, new models add new features and are made from new materials. In 1955 the ingenious Virobloc system was added so that the blade could be locked in the open position, and in 2000 the system was improved so that the blade could be locked either open or closed.

Number 8 Outdoor

This modern classic is designed for use in outdoor sports, at sea, on a mountain, etc. It has a strong 8.5cm blade made from stainless steel with chrome to prevent corrosion. The handle is made from fibreglass-reinforced polyamide so it is water-resistant and can be used in all weathers. It also has attached a 110-decibel pea-less whistle for use in an emergency.
