Origin of the K2 Brand

K2 Skis was founded in Seattle in the 1960s. It began with two brothers, Bill and Don Kirschner who got their start making the bases of animal cages before moving on to the creation of skis. While there may not be any connection between the two industries, this did not prevent the brothers from making a successful go of it. Their idea was to construct less rigid skis that were more fun to ride by using fibreglass. The idea was a good one and success was soon to follow. The American brand soon moved on to compete against the European skiing giants. This came with a string of investors and buyers who added strength to the company. The brand has always been quick to respond to changing trends and is a pioneer of technological trends.

Strengths of the K2 Brand

A Precursor in its Field

Almost all skiers are familiar with the symmetrical ski. It is usually called the twin tip ski and it was designed to have no defined front or rear which makes it ideal for freestyle. The K2 brand was one of the first to adopt this design in the 90s. The same is true for the rocker. K2 worked on this design with the intent of creating the ideal freeskiing in powder experience. Early adoption paid off and now K2 is recognised as one of the leaders in the field with ski models such as the Pon2oon and the Seth.

An International Shock Team

The K2 team is made up of Americans, Swiss, Canadians, Austrians, Germans and the French. Their styles are as mixed as the countries of origin specialising in Freeski, Freestyle and high flight Freeride. They have been united by a mutual love for adventure, challenge and they are constantly looking to push themselves further in the same manner as the K2 brand.
