Move to natural

Icebreaker is first of all a love story

For Icebreaker, the manufacturer of natural performance clothing, nature always offers a solution. For more than 25 years, the New Zealand brand has worked with what nature provides to create high-performance outdoor clothing from merino wool and other natural fibers, offering an alternative to synthetic clothing. Rated A + in the 2019 Ethical Fashion Report, icebreaker continues to shake things up, while championing an environmentally friendly, transparent and responsible way of working. Choosing icebreaker is choosing nature and helping to preserve our planet for future generations.

Jérémy Moon discovered merino at the age of 24 thanks to his American girlfriend. Following one of her trips to New Zealand, from which she returned changed, she told him about this extraordinary merino sheep breeder. A week later, the two men are sitting around a restaurant table. The breeder, Brian Brackenridge, puts a woolen t-shirt on the table, Jeremy tries it on and will never leave him. Nothing to do with the memory of the classic wool sweater, this merino t-shirt is ultra-soft. He wore it for all his activities, from cycling to running, day and night. Unlike the technical t-shirts he used to wear that clung to his skin. He was surprised to learn that t-shirts made of synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and polypropylene, were made of plastic. His life then took an unexpected turn.

Icebreaker's Origins

The company was established in New Zealand in 1995. Its founder, Jeremy Moon came up with the idea for the brand in 1994, when his girlfriend introduced him to Brian Brackenridge, a Merino sheep farmer, from Pohuenui Island. Brackenridge gave Moon a t-shirt made from wool from his flock. Moon fell in love with it and realised that the material could be used to produce sustainable and practical alternatives to the synthetic polyester outdoor activity apparel on the market at the time. By the end of 1994, Icebreaker clothing was being stocked in 14 New Zealand stores. The brand has grown rapidly since then and its garments are now available in more than 40 countries.

The Key Strengths of the Icebreaker Brand

Icebreaker's philosophy is based on the principles of sustainability and ethical production, so their garments are ideal for environmentally aware adventurers. The company makes simple and versatile clothing for hiking, snow sports, training and more, as well as for everyday wear. They focus on designing elegant, long-lasting clothes, rather than disposable fashion pieces, but they still embrace and develop new technologies and ideas. In 2011, for example, Icebreaker began to use """"corespun"""", a new technology which uses a nylon filament within the wool to make their garments last longer, while in 2013, they developed a natural alternative to duck down using merino wool. Icebreaker's products are designed to be layered, so you can adapt your outfits to suit the changing seasons with ease. Their collection includes men's and women's underwear, t-shirts, leggings and jackets, as well as children's clothing.
