The History of Columbia

The modern outdoors wear giant that is Columbia grew out of a small hat company in Portland, Oregon which was purchased by Chairman Gert Boyle's parents when they fled Nazi Germany in 1938. Today, the day to day running of the company is managed by her son Tim. Despite being a global business, it's still a family one. Over the years, the firm grew from its base in the Pacific North West o have global reach, but the clothing is still inspired by the rugged outdoors of Oregon, a state which seems purpose built for hiking.

The philosophy lying behind Columbia apparel can be summed up by a quote from Gert Boyle: ""It's perfect, now make it better"". The company's clothing is rigorously tested to ensure that it can cope with the climate of the Pacific Northwest, an area which has a maritime climate similar to Britain's.
