Ultimate Direction was founded in 1985 by Bryce Thatcher, a long-time mountain runner who used a sewing machine to make himself a hydration pack. After that, Ultimate Direction became a business specialized in convenient, hands-free hydration gear for runners and other athletes.
Ultimate Direction has more product lines than just hydrobags, but one thing is for certain: hydrobags require knowledge of material to keep their own weight light while holding kilograms of water. From bags to tents, Ultimate Direction has mastered choosing materials for its products and crafting them into perfect combinations of portability and durability.
From Colorado to Washington, Canada to Sweden, Ultimate Direction has a fantastic roster of individual athletic ambassadors who use its products and go out of their way to endorse them. These ambassadors range from long-term ""signature"" ambassadors to OCR participants, with a smattering of other interesting categories such as biking ambassadors. These athletes not only support the company, but work with it, providing feedback and helping to improve it. The brand even has some more low-key ""trail ambassadors"", who are not full-time sports people but who still get great use out of Ultimate Direction's products.
Ultimate Direction came into being to fill hydration needs, and that's arguably what it does best. Ultimate Direction's hydrobags vary in capacity, allowing the buyer to choose just how much weight they need to be able to carry. And they include additional features, like pockets that tighten or stretch to hold phones, cameras and extra water bottles, all with the same security. If you need a simple belt to hold some extra water, or a hydrobag that can enable you to travel light while keeping your poles and essentials still on-hand, the option is there.
Despite its inception as a business specialized purely in hydration, Ultimate Direction does make other products, and tents are among the most notable. Ultimate Direction's tents are made for portability and convenience, like its other products, and they're perfect for single-person use on long mountain runs. Their tents are fully protected from wind and bugs, and with add-ons such as a tarp, from rain and cold too.
